Welcome!
Hello and welcome to Mr. Bryan's activity page for Tomlinson Middle School. On this page I will be working with you on skills like comparing/contrasting, analyzing, and evaluating ideas.
Have you ever been looking at two different people, and noticed that they don't look like they have much in common? Their clothes are different, their hair is not fixed the same way, and they don't hang around with the same circles of friends - You're comparing and contrasting.
Have you ever taken a look at a gadget and tried to figure out how it works? Like a car - What makes the wheels go around? What makes the engine run? What makes the wheels turn whenever the driver turns the steering wheel? What makes the car stop when the driver presses the brake pedal? You're analyzing.
Have you ever read a story that you do not think is "good"? Have you ever seen a movie that you thought was terrible? You're evaluating when you make a statement like that. However, in school, in addition to being able to say whether something is good or bad is not enough - we need to recognize the qualities of good or bad material. Why was the movie terrible? Why was the story good? Why is that car too crummy to drive?
These are the skills we will begin to look at on my website, and continuing to use in the classroom. These skills are known as Higher Order Thinking Skills, and they have to do with the higher functions of your brain.
You may begin by clicking one of the options in the dark blue banner above - Compare and Contrast, Analysis, Synthesis, or Evaluation
I hope that you enjoy yourself and have a great time.
